CSCR This Week: Rainforest Alliance Certified Brazil

Greetings POK Coffee Lovers,

This week we're giving you Daterra Petit Sweet Yellow Brazil, a sweet honey-like coffee with notes of caramel, molasses, toasted pecans, passion fruit and malty grains.  This coffee is Rain Forest Alliance certified, produced by Daterra Sustainable Coffee, a certified B corporation.

In case you are wondering what it means to be a certified B corporation, we found the following description in a 2016 Harvard Business Review article:

B Corps are social enterprises certified by B Lab, a nonprofit organization, “based on how they create value for non-shareholding stakeholders, such as their employees, the local community, and the environment. Once a firm crosses a certain performance threshold on these dimensions, it makes amendments to its corporate charter to incorporate the interests of all stakeholders into the fiduciary duties of directors and officers. These steps demonstrate that a firm is following a fundamentally different governance philosophy than a traditional shareholder-centered corporation.”  Other B corporations you may be more familiar with include Patagonia, Ben and Jerry’s, Seventh Generation and Eileen Fisher.

So by drinking this week’s roast, you are supporting the triple bottom line – people, planet and profit – to which B corps are accountable.

To another cup together,

The NRR Team
