CSCR This Week: Black & Tan

Greetings POK Coffee Lovers,

This Week’s RoastIn British pubs, it is common to hear an order called out for a "Black and Tan", which is a layered drink of dark Irish stout mixed with a light pale ale.  This week’s Black and Tan roast, named after this famous beer mix for its dual-colored beans, brings together light and dark coffees.  Our version blends FTO Mexico Oaxaca with FTO Uganda.  Together they have notes of chocolate, molasses and raisin.

Coffee News – Did you know that the University of California at Davis is home to the Coffee Center, a research facility dedicated to coffee.  Working in partnership with industry, more than 50 faculty members from departments spanning the university conduct research on such topics as:

  • Sustainability and re-purposing of coffee cherries;
  • Energy efficiency during roasting and brewing;
  • Identification and characterization of flavor molecules;
  • Nutritional effects on health; and
  • Agricultural economics and coffee law, to name a few.

In addition to the traditional emphasis on the chemical, physical, and biological sciences, the Center plans to begin looking at the social, cultural, and psychological aspects of coffee, collaborating with faculty in the humanities and social science programs as well.

We hope that you continue to stay safe and healthy.

Here's to another cup – virtually together,

The NRR Team
